St Andrew’s Starbeck

The
foundation stone for our present building was laid in 1909, and the building
was completed in 1910. Today, in 2013 the building limits our ability to
serve the community of Starbeck well. We are planning changes to make the
building more hospitable and more accessible.

St Andrew’s church has a vision to be a resource centre for the
community of Starbeck through welcoming people with open arms leading them
towards a Christian faith, while at the same time resourcing stronger
Christians and affirming their faith. Our average congregation at the Sunday
9 am service is 70, and at the 10:45 family service is 130. On top of this we
have a very active Sunday Club involving 80 or so children, two midweek youth
groups, a thriving lunch club for the elderly, family spot for parents and
toddlers, host many community activities and engage regularly in prayer and
worship activities that require sacred space. In the summer months we run a
week-long children’s holiday club and another week-long “holiday at home” for
the elderly.

In 2006 the
leadership of St Andrew’s began looking at ways the building could be
improved for the benefit of both the regular worshipping community and the
wider community in Starbeck. A major consideration was for the building to be
easily accessible to all people regardless of any disability, to provide for
the comfort and needs of all visitors, to create a warm, hospitable and
welcoming meeting space, including a large and flexible worship area. The
changes to the building are part of our

 Starbeck Welcome
Project
.

Timescale & cost

A project of this nature is always a long process. The information
on this page tells the story so far from 2006 to 2013. The Buildings Working
Group meets each month to review the plans, the finance and the time scale.

You can see the current project timescale by using this link
to the
project
timeline

Funding is an on-going process and there has been significant
giving from within the church; we are also seeking external funding. The
building
fund summary sheet
shows the status of the building fund. This summary is
regularly updated.

There are
links to the right which enable you to look at the documents we have been
publishing through the period 2009 to 2013. These are PDF files which you can
either download or read in your internet browser.

We issue newsletters to update the church and community on progress
with the project, and we have written community leaflets too, all of which
can be read using the links to the right.

The architects’ plans

As
stated above, the architects’ plans have been approved by
Harrogate Borough Council as well as the Diocesan
Advisory Committee.
They are available here as PDF files for download should you
wish to view them.
